Midweek memories of moments at MIDI

The sun shone on Midi and all was good. And at the end of the first day, Lao Cui said unto the gathered masses, "people say that Western rock music is like a rolling stone. I've always thought of Chinese rock music as like a rolling egg. The stone may be solid, but the egg has the chance of life."

There was certainly plenty of life in the crowd at the festival who had to be asked to calm down by Midi School's head honcho Zhang Fan, concerned by the crush at the front during Turdus Musicus' entertaining set. As soon as he finished his warning, the lead singer of Turdus jumped into the crowd. We're guessing he doesn't speak much Mandarin.

Though Friday night's rain turned Saturday into a mudfest, it didn't dampen the spirit of the fans or the bands, with Subs (at YYT with fellow Midi highlights Bonk tonight) naturally one of the highlights.

The sun returned for the third and final day with another solid line-up of bands with the openers Zuo You arguably the highlight (though Socalled's set deserves a mention purely for leaving everyone who saw it utterly bewildered). Good times.

If your Midi photo thirst still hasn't been whetted sufficiently, there's a bunch more shots here (including a video of the Inner Mongolian Kao Rou Disco) and a collection of pictures of the graffiti here.
