Five Questions For: Rogue Transmission (gone acoustic!)

Known in Shanghai for their "rock you like a hurricane" style, Rogue Transmission (listen to them here) has promised everybody something completely different for their set tonight at Anar. That's right... they're stripping their songs of the electric, twiddling with their rhythms and keeping it cool for a one night only psychdubacousticwhat? set: an Evening with Rogue Transmission.

We hounded RT drummer, Fabien Barbet, to give us a little hint about what we can expect tonight.

Describe what's going to be happening at Anar this Thursday night.

An evening with The Rogue Transmission... but one that even people who have been following us since 2007 can't imagine! It's also going to be a good chance to catch some live music in a neat and cozy atmosphere with affordable drinks - completely different from that weekend feel with extremely busy gigs and events, like we've seen recently in Shanghai.

The Rogue Transmission, usually known for their hard rock sound, reins it in with a more laid back set on the 14th at Anar.
Where: Anar, 129 Xingfu Lu near Fahuazhen Lu, 幸福路129号
Starts: Thursday, May 14, 8:30PM

So this is kind of a new direction for Rogue Transmission... why did you guys decide to do an acoustic set?

Well, the idea came up somewhere in late 2008. Firstly, I basically wanted to push us to do it as a way to challenge ourselves, try re-arranging our songs in a complete different way. We were thinking it could be a possible disguise to invade some unexpected space for an underground rock band like us, and touch new audiences that would never venture to Yuyintang or Dream Factories.

But people in the so-called "artsy" venues don't seem to be that fond of breaking the barriers down trying to be original in their programming and proposing something different to their regulars - even if, chances are, they could enjoy it just as much... So in the end we decided to do it for fun, to surprise and thank the people that usually come to see us with something they've definitely never seen before.

Will we be hearing some Rogue Transmission staples anyway?

We've got the whole night for us there, so we might play a second set of our classic brand of "pointy tits rock" who knows... Just show us you want some of that ;o)

Who else will be playing with you guys?

Ben [Bottiler] will open the night solo playing his repertoire of self-composed folk songs. This guy is truly amazing! I can tell you, as he's the front man in my other band The Snots and he also hits the drums for our friends, The Dropkicks! If you've already seen those two bands live, I can only guess how amazed you'll be when discovering more of his talents...

Also Dj Heatwolves and MauMau from the Baijiut Robot Parties will accompany us til the end of the night with their crazy tunes!

Do you think you'll ever do something like this again?

Obviously not. This is not something we wish to pursue for sure, we have way too much fun in rocking a stage the hard way! So it'll be a once-in-a-lifetime performance - be there or be square...

Interesting photo. Don't they know where the camera is?

Typical "artsy fartsy" musician photo pose (sickeningly pretentious). Check out the South Park episode where the boys form a boy band singing "Finger Bang" for a good mockery.
