Tales of Old Peking Book Launch by Earnshaw Books
Earnshaw Books will host an evening of conversation, books and live jazz featuring Graham Earnshaw to celebrate the release of Tales of Old Peking, authored by Shanghaiist contributor Derek Sandhaus!
Tales of Old Peking is the second installment in the ‘Tales’ series, building upon the quirky historical scrapbook format of Graham Earnshaw’s Tales of Old Shanghai.
Drawing upon first-hand accounts, images, poems, cartoons and more, this book recounts the amusing and sometimes terrifying tales of China’s tumultuous capital when it was a flash point of international confrontation.
Inside you’ll find stories of eunuchs, concubines, emperors and priests; treaties, tiffins, deceits and betrayals. You’ll even find invitations to Thanksgiving Dinner at the American Legation and plans for ill-conceived elevated highway along the Great Wall. Everything East meets West, the good and the bad, from Marco to Mao.
Come relive the glamor of old China on the Bund with two complimentary drinks for the first 150 guests, copies of Tales of Old Peking for a special 100RMB promotional price (normally 175RMB), and a chance to meet the author.
