Live Music This Weekend Part 1: Out of town edition

There's some excellent bands in town this weekend (and we'll talk about them later), but there's also a couple of great reasons to head out of the city and catch some top music.

In fact, there's so many great reasons that we've decided we need to give you double the "Live Music" column trouble this week. Here's Part I: the out of town edition - since skipping out of Shanghai city central sometimes takes a little more prep work.

Antidote Festival, Zhujiajiao
Let's be honest, if you've been to one water town, you've kind of been to them all. And chances are (if you're as lazy as us) you've been to Zhujiajiao - the closest "Venice of the East." So why go back? It's the electronic music, stupid. Yep, this Saturday sees the good people at Antidote host a festival down there with a cracking line-up. What's more, it'll all be wrapped up by early evening, allowing you enough time to head back into town for the Casino Demon CD release party and Free the Robot's show afterwards at YYT. Nice.

Here's just a few of the acts you can catch: Reptile & Retard, Zig Zag, Resist Resist, B6, Ben Houge (who recently put a great new track, 口口口口口口口口, up on his neocha page, by the way), as well as all your favourite local DJs from Ben Huang to Ozone, tootekool to the Bananas Soundsystem. Check the flyer for the details.

Reminder: You need a ticket to go. If you happen to make it anywhere near these places this week, be sure to follow these directions, courtesy of Antidote:

All week @ ENO shop
地址:上海长乐路139-23号
Add:No.139-23, Changle Road, Shanghai

Wednesday, May 20 @ Yellow @ LOGO bar, 13 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu. Just ask for Michael at the DJ booth.

Thursday, May 21 @ Ratatat @ Dream Factory -- we'll be there in the crowd. You know who we are. If you don't, ask around.

Friday, May 22 @ Ugly Duckling @ Shelter -- ask at the bar.

Ningbo Rocks, Ningbo

Held in the city's Lao Wai Tan area (kind of like Xintiandi but by the river), Ningbo Rocks will be the first rock festival held in Ningbo according to the organisers. Two Shanghai-based bands, punks Loudspeaker and Zooma-fronted Xinjiang-like stoner-ska outfit Magnetic will be making the trip down the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. Also from Shanghai will be the Reload Crew who'll be attacking a specially built graffiti wall with cans of paint. They'll all be joined by several bands and DJs from Ningbo itself to keep the Lao Wai Tan rocking until well into the morning.
