The Net Reacts: scorned boyfriend who posted ex's naked pics is detained

The scorned Shanghai boyfriend who posted pornographic pictures of his ex after she dumped him has now been detained by the police - for charges of "insulting behavior," according to Shanghai Daily.

Last week, Shanghai Daily said:

About 30 pictures of a naked woman together with her personal information including her name, age and family address had been posted on a popular online forum by a person claiming to be her ex-boyfriend.

The person, identified as "Garros," said that he had been recently dumped by the woman surnamed Yin after his business failed.

The incident has triggered commentary from Chinese netizens, who mostly fall into two groups - one of which feel the man is deranged and another, more conservative group, which argues that the girl kind of deserved it.

According to Sohu's BBS forum, a good score of netizens hold the opinion of that "some of the women are too slutty. They have sex with whoever; this type of woman deserve punishment like this."

One even goes further and thinks that Chinese educational system is flawed. One commenter, called Crazy Head, argued:

The liberty of women is an important indicator of a society's openness. This incident is a prove that women are more liberal than ever before. However, this kind of liberal is not good. The reason is that Chinese schools haven't taught the students enough moral standards; instead, they focus too much on teaching them Maths, Physics, etc. Therefore, even some students are graduated from universities, they still do bad things like prostitution or adultery. This is a serious social problem and we need to pay attention to people's lack of moral standards."

On the flip side, on the same Sohu BBS, others believe that the man has serious psychological problems that he should go to the doctor; the girl is nothing more than a victim of this "crazy" man. To put the blame on her because she trusted her boyfriend with private pictures is to throw stones from a glass house.

With the twin modernizing forces of liberal sexuality and internet technology, we are bound to see more of these problems crop up and more debate on them when they do.

As for this story, both sides are paying for the boyfriend's act - though the girlfriend may have been able to get her ex-beau arrested (and to have her pictures taken down from at least the biggest portals), she has been forced to leave her job thanks to pressure from the public realm. She has been staying at home since then.
