Live Music This Weekend: The Mushrooms, Sunlife, and Zhi Wang

Pedants might point out that Thursday night (and indeed Monday, included below) doesn't count as the weekend. But frankly, this is no place for pedantry. With the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the weekend really is starting early.

Tonight
The Mushrooms' Zapatafication of YYT continues apace. Remember back in March how they instigated a party that specified discounts for girls depending on the length (or lack thereof) of their mini skirts? Well, this time they're going for a High School Girl Uniform Party. Promotion aside, The Mushrooms have really been on form of late and they'll be ably supported by Brit-poppers Sonnet, while newcomers Weedlaw and Lock round out the line-up. It should be a great night (we'll be there for the music, obviously).
¥40 (half price for girls in plaid skirt and stockings), 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

Friday
Live Bar regulars Last Boul head downtown tonight as they front a night of Korean student bands at YYT. With support from Time+ and Half Year, expect a punk rock and plenty of it.

Meanwhile, Live Bar themselves have Sunlife, a band fresh from Tianjin's Conservatory of Music. That doesn't mean you should expect any finery or classical training necessarily. Live Bar describe them as "a melody death core metal band", which, let's face it, is pretty intriguing. They'll be supported by fellow metalheads Conterspell.
¥30, 9pm, 721 Kunming Lu, near Tongbei Lu, 昆明路721号近通北路

Saturday
Got a lighter that you've not waved in the air for a while? Then head on up to Live Bar where you'll find saccharine balladeers Pair in from the capital. She's sings floaty vocals about dreams and flowers, he strums his guitar and broods.

YYT will be hosting the first of their New Faces Underground nights. The promise is that this will be a regular thing, but until recently, 0093 were holding their monthly showcases at YYT and had to move elsewhere due to Yuyintang's packed schedule. Details on the line-up are sketchy at this point, so how different this will end up being to the 0093 showcases is hard to say. Regardless, it should be a good opportunity to support Shanghai's up and coming bands.
Free, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

Sunday
Speaking of 0093, one of their responses to YYT's full schedule was to put on gigs themselves. And that's exactly what they're doing this Sunday. Rebecca, Fanqie Chao Dan, Wu Zijing, and Pianissimo are your truly underground acts.
¥30, 2:30pm, 93 Lingling Lu, near Damuqiao Lu, 零陵路93号, 近大木桥路

Monday
As it's Children's Day, YYT bring us a Big Kids Party. Shanghainese rockers Dragon Pizza, Lin Di (her out of Cold Fairyland) fronted and cat-obsessed Bad Himo, and funk punks Lightninger will all be there, but the highlight ought to be Zhi Wang (King of Retards). Of course if Lu Chen's involved, it's always unmissable, but his band with Ba Fang, the frontwoman from short-lived punk rockers The Fuck'ndrolls, is definitely a big draw for a Monday night.

Good video. That was a great gig. In fact, as much as I love Hedgehog, I had a much better time watching The Mushrooms with a proper packed house with jumping and moshing. Luckily there's no lights on the crowd in that vid or I'd be spotted.

I'm hoping it's gonna be the same tonight.

For anyone who didn't make it to The Mushrooms, you missed a hell of a show. Check out the photos here (believe me, that link is well worth clicking)
