Video: Grandma appears on Happy Girls

Happy Girls, the new SARFT-approved edition of uber-popular singing show Super Girls, has kicked off with what the Wall Street Journal is calling China's “own Susan Boyle moment.” 79-year-old Wu Baiwei sang “On Songhua River,” a patriotic song about the Sino-Japanese War to a panel of judges that... well, quite honestly didn't look nearly as moved, shocked or impressed as Simon Cowell and friends. Maybe it's a culture thing. Still, she did earn a placement on the show so we'll be seeing more of Grandma Wu soon!

After her performance, one of the judges asks why Wu, at her age, would be drawn to participate in a contest that is better known for its young female contestants. Wu ways she can’t hear him too clearly, so he comes up to her side to repeat the question.

She replies that she signed up for the contest without exactly knowing what she was getting herself into. She ran into a crowd of young women who were signing up for the contest on the street and asked if an older woman like her could join. They welcomed her and told her that age didn’t matter. Wu said she only later discovered that she would be taking part in the widely viewed hit show.
