Banned: Supposedly detoxifying chickens bitten to death by poisonous snakes

WARNING: Video on the right shows a disturbing example of animal cruelty. Click at your own risk.

That the Cantonese will eat anything that has legs apart from tables is a time-tested truth. And they will travel loooong distances and search high and low for places where they can put weird things into their mouth. Of course it always helps if you've heard from someone who's heard from someone who's heard from someone else about the marvelous nutritious and alimentary effects of this weird stuff that you're about to eat.

Apparently, a new and supposedly detoxifying dish cooked from chickens that are slowly bitten to death by poisonous snakes is now making its way round restaurants in Guangdong and Chongqing. The word on the street is that the more poisonous the snake, the better the chicken will taste (oh the crazy things that people will believe!). Since this video surfaced, it's been viewed about 380,000 times and the storm of controversy that was soon unleashed in the Chinese media soon led health authorities to ban restaurants from serving the dish.

We give them full marks for acting fast, but this likely isn't going to stop people from trying out the next magic dish that comes along. More weird food blasts from the past here, here and here.
