Live Music This Weekend: Candy Shop, Thumb Girl, and Hatred in Eyes

There's not exactly tumbleweed blowing through Shanghai's live music venues this weekend, but it's fair to say that compared to the steady steam of bands we've had in recent months, this weekend seems a quiet one. Of course, Torturing Nurse's NOIShanghai show will ensure it is anything but, while SOMA are bringing together some of the city's brightest young bands tonight.

Tonight
Last week, The Mushrooms packed out YYT and played out of their skins for their High School theme night (if you missed it, you really ought to check out Pu Pu's photos here). This week some more of Shanghai's most promising bands are playing at a theme night of their own as SOMA organise a singles night for the Dream Factory. All-girl indie-poppers Momo headline, with support from SOMA stablemates Little Nature and the excellent Candy Shop. There's also a welcome return for Pinkberry (they've been away a little while due to a personnel change and the shooting of a new music video) while Da Fresh round out a strong line-up. Oh, and to smooth the course of true love, there'll be cheap (well, cheap by DF standards) drinks all night long.

If you want to head underground, 0093 oblige with a show from Shenzhen's Liang Ying. Her music has been described as "folktronica" but we'd expect a stripped down acoustic show more toward the folk end of that spectrum for this one.

Up at Live Bar there's a night of folk ballads, experimental poetry and general improvisation from Sichuanese group Gao who are playing three gigs in as many nights in Shanghai with the Gao Chaos Everywhere collective. They'll be at 021 tomorrow and 0093 on Sunday.

Dantes, the musical equivalent of Da Shan is at YYT meanwhile promoting his new album. He's French, but wait, writes and sings in Mandarin. In keeping with the best Chinese pop tradition, his music is exceptionally cheesy. This picture tells you pretty much all you need to know.

Saturday
If you're not busy on Saturday, you could do worse than spend the day up at Live Bar. The 27th NOIShanghai show is in the afternoon with Hong Kong's Hatred in Eyes and Shanghai's Disfigurement Activities Room this month's guests of Torturing Nurse. The evening promises to be a little kinder on your eardrums as Thumb Girl bring their indie folk stylings to the stage. Admittedly not a lot of crossover between the two audiences there, but not a bad day out all the same.

Sunday
That's Shanghai have their Best of Shanghai weekend this Saturday and Sunday with live bands playing throughout the event on the pedestrian street between Jiuguang and Jing'an Temple. The acts you don't want to miss will be Candy Shop and Monroe Stahr. If you don't catch the former on Friday night (or you just want to see them again) they'll be on at 4:30pm, while the latter will play at 6pm and will be selling copies of their new album.

Shanghai's Korean band contingent head to Live Bar in the evening as Half Year and Last Boul are joined by their bizarrely monikered friends Timet-Black, Timet-White, Silence-Colume and aka D.X.L.
