The Chinese Academy of Sciences: China in 2050

utopiachinesecademyscience.jpg A lot of folks on the Chinese Twitter clone Fanfou have been tweeting about an article regarding the Chinese Academy of Sciences' "blueprint" for China's development from now until the year 2050. Here's our very rough translation followed by a typically snide and cynical commentary.

China in 2050: will be a political civilized and developed country, where socialist democracy and rule of law will be highly developed, the country will be unified, the people will be united, the society will be stable, and the people's political rights and right to development will be safeguarded, as will the country's security.

China in 2050: Will be a materially developed country, become the largest economy in the world, have a GDP that will be that of an average developed country, an economy that has stable and balanced growth. Science and technology will be among the world's best, and most of the people will have materially comfortable and healthy living standards.

China in 2050: Will be a socially developed country, that is fair and just, where the people are healthy and have longevity, where there are enough jobs for working people, where the the people are harmonious and get along, and where the social safety net is functional and effective, and where rural-urban development is conjoined, where regional disparities shrink, and where the whole society is full of creative energy.

China in 2050: A spiritually civilized country, where the people receive high quality obligatory education, where higher learning is increasingly democratized, where the people believe in lifelong learning, where there is a vital and energetic creative class, where the entire society is patriotic, professional, sincere, friendly, and moral, and where Chinese culture and foreign cultures blend and bring out the best in each other.

China in 2050: An ecologically developed nation, where humanity and nature coexist harmoniously, where the degradation of the environment is controlled, where the mountains are graceful and the waters pure, where the sky is blue and inviting, and where the mountains and rivers are picturesque.

China in 2050: A highly open society, a country that will become a protector and advocate of global peace and justice, and where the Chinese people will be as friendly equals with the other people of the world, where the transfer of advanced knowledge and technological capital will benefit the development of the country so that it can continually create and make contributions to world society.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences says, in the process of realizing these lofty goals of historical development, China will encounter a unique opportunity for scientific and technological development, as well as face serious challenges in terms of national (and natural) resources, ecology and environment, population and public health, traditional and non-traditional security (???), and must use scientific and technological development to slowly solve these problems. [end]

Our commentary: Sir Thomas More, eat your heart out. Please God let the writer of this post live until his 70s, just so he can have the chance either be pleasantly surprised and go gently unto that good night knowing that humanity was actually capable of some progress or else just die bitter and alone, deriving a smidgeon of solace in his last moments knowing that his unremittingly bleak and cynical view of humanity had found some basis in fact. Then, just after whispering a quiet 'I told you so', he'll give up the ghost with a smile upon his cracked and dessicated lips.
