International dragon boat match in Hangzhou

IMG_0651.JPG Our neighboring city Hangzhou's Xixi Wetlands played host this last weekend to the finals of the Hangzhou Xixi International Dragon Boat Match.

After several weeks' worth of preliminary matches, the three-weekend-long competition came down to the finals on Saturday, July 4th. The packed event schedule included tours of the city, copious amounts of food, and of course, the thrilling dragon boat finals.

The match saw competitors from 10+ companies from the Shanghai/Hangzhou area, along with Shanghai expats, pit it out for racing glory and some sweet trophies.

In order to compete, each team had to comprise of half Chinese and half expats. While this may not be the image most people have when they think of an "international dragon boat match," the mix of Chinese and international racers made for a great weekend of racing and cultural exchange.

In the end, returning champions Discovery Sports took home the first place trophy along with gifts for the entire team.

Racer Brian Chia from Discovery Sports commented on his experience over the weekend: "It was very fun, and even though there was a lot of attention on the races, it was still laid-back and I had a great time. I felt very accomplished and I know my Chinese teammates did too."
