We had a chat with R3 of S.T.D. Promotions (the people who brought us Ratatat in May) about his work on tonight's launch of Shanghai's newest bar and live music venue, Not Me. We also got to take a look around the place on Dongping Lu, and while it's not the biggest venue in town, it's definitely got potential for some great parties.
Being the single-minded partygoers we are, we immediately started off with some questions about tomorrow's big double-release party with NOKO Jeans.
Since there's already some buzz about the party going around, we wondered what kind of turnout R3 expects.
"Shanghai works on buzz, so we're expecting a good turnout," he said. Since it's the beginning of the summer, people will be looking for a new place to go, and R3 is betting that Not Me will be just the place for these people.
And what can those of you looking for a new place expect from Not Me?
The music will likely revolve around indie (specifically local music) with a specific focus on tons of great electro and disco beats. When we asked R3 where he expects Not Me to fit in among Shanghai's music venues, he told us that he doesn't expect to replace anything already in Shanghai. Not Me will hopefully become "a new limb" among Shanghai's other staple party spots (LoGo, Shelter, etc.).
STD is also planning some more high-profile acts a couple months down the line. Shanghai's music scene is "heading in the right direction. It's been an amazing year for Shanghai with high-profile acts like Ratatat, etc," R3 said, adding that he expects Not Me to help continue this trend and help develop the music scene even more.
If you were going to just stay in tonight and re-watch season 2 of Grey's Anatomy, we definitely suggest you put away the box set and head over to Not Me's launch party. Spinning the decks will be Baijiu Robot, Kidplastik, and R3 along with Special Guest Do It!. Some finger food as well as free-flow drinks will be provided from 9pm to 11pm, and cover is free.
