There is something goin down
Quoting the Bee Gees in the introduction to a post about a punk/rock event might seem a little off, but we reckon this quote fits in quite nicely. Here's what's goin' down: Tonight is part two of Shanghai Night Fever with a primarily pop punk line up featuring all-girl group Black Luna, Little Nature, Mortal Fools and Dragon Pizza. Pinkberry have been forced to pull out but, despite the electricity problems that plunged Yuyintang into un-air conditioned darkness for part of the night yesterday, tonight's gig should be a good one. We spoke to Dragon Pizza bassist and co-organiser, Yuki, about the event and his band.
Tell us a bit about Shanghai Night Fever.
This is an event for Shanghai, that's why we're doing it. Hopefully it'll help expand the live scene here in the city and give people more entertainment options. The idea is just to put on two nights where people can just have a lot of fun. We just want people to forget about any troubles they might have at school or at work or with their families and just come and have a good time.
The film Saturday Night Fever helped make disco music massively popular at the time. Do you hope this event will do the same for the Shanghai rock scene?
Yes of course. To be honest, there's not a lot of unity at the moment in the Shanghai music scene, no real togetherness. So its development has been pretty slow. I hope that everyone involved will work together more and collaborate more. If we all work together then we can build a really strong foundation for the scene and it’s environment, organisations and its structure.
Which bands other than yourselves should people be looking out for at Shanghai Night Fever?
That's tough… I can’t choose. I recommend seeing all of the bands who are taking part!
Alright, well tell us a bit about your band Dragon Pizza then.
It's myself on bass with Wang Lei, also drummer in Loudspeaker, and Qi Xu. We've been together since September 2007. The name Dragon Pizza represents our different backgrounds and where we come from - I'm from Osaka and the other guys are Shanghainese.
Your band has quite an eclectic style. How would you describe it to someone who's never seen you perform before?
Does music need to be explained or described? I'd say that our purpose is just to make people happy, simple as that. Our music reflects our different cultures, languages, environments and so on and how they all came together here. Our music is full of contradictions and confusion just like you find in life but ultimately it's a positive form of expression and is full of enthusiasm.
Each of us has different influences which make up the band hence our style so it's kind of hard to say that any particular band or artist has had a big influence on us as a group. Personally, the Japanese band Maximum the Hormone have been a major influence.
