Weekend Roundup: Since there's still more to be said on Xinjiang

  • James Fallows finds a sign advertising for restaurant staff at a hotel in Kashgar. Basically, it says that "No Uighurs Need Apply".
  • Zhong Dajun, a prominent economic consultant in China who is definitely more "nationalist" than "left wing", is now circulating a piece (Chinese only) called “The Xinjiang Incident Reveals Significant Flaws in Government Management.”
  • The Globe and Mail's Mark MacKinnon describes getting kicked out of Kashgar... well, kind of kicked out of Kashgar.
  • The Global Post reports that Uyghur workers in Guangdong, the area which first sparked the racial tensions that led to rioting in Xinjiang, are being held behind locked gates and guarded doors.
  • The official death toll in the region has been raised to 184 (injured persons: over 1000). Of the dead, 137 are reported to be Han Chinese and 46 are reported to be Uyghur. But these numbers are being questioned by everyone - Han and Uyghur.

Chinese Americans do not have sympathy for "mother mullah" Kadeer or any of her uighurs muslim thugs who butchered Han Chinese families including women and children. Chinese Americans do not have ill wishes towards either China - our ancestors' home land or Chinese people -- our brothers and sisters by blood.

China has Chinese Americans' full support! China should and will rule these crazy uighurs thugs by "blood and iron". As a Chinese, I am really proud of the bloody blow Chinese government has dealt to these uighurs thugs.

Chinese leaders should follow the footsteps of Bismarck - China " must collect and keep its strength for the right moment, which has been missed several times already"; China's "frontiers ?. are not conducive to a healthy national life; it is not by means of speeches and majority resolutions that the great issues of the day will be decided-that was the great mistake ?.-but by blood and iron"!

in Just one night - 2000 crazy muslim nuts/uighurs seperatists rioters and 140+ shot dead and 1400+ arrests and 800 casualties - wow! That will surely teach those uighurs mulah nuts and tibetan monks a serious lesson - do not ever mess with CHINESE!

the extraordinary harshness and swiftness of the crack down and the promptness the government handled it and anounced it tells the world loud and clear - the Chinese Nation bears absolutely no mercy towards seperation by any minorities.

China has Chinese Americans' full support!

I don't want to be represented by someone like you. Count me out!

Thank you kalibaba for speaking on behalf of all Chinese Americans. With your authority, you should speak at the G8 summit.

Does mr. Fallow or ms. Chow aware that Uigurs Chinese are muslin and they have taboos on certain food (e.g.pork) ? As you can see, the job ad is for a Han Chinese resturant. Pork is a must in Han Chinese' cuisine. That ad sign shows respect to people with different religions.

CHinese were taught in school not to mention the word "pig" to Muslim. But it seems westerners were not taught so.

I am Chinese American too, I have a different opinion. I think that Uighurs are "Chinese too" and should be treated fairly and thier rights and interests should be respected.

Anyway, as long as they are not fairly treated, the they will continue to agitate and Han Chinese will suffer too. I think we should have a civil rights law in China (like we do in the USA) that protects Chinese minorities too and that bans discrimination.

Besides, just because you don't want to eat a certain type foods, does not mean that you can not cook it. A lot of Han chinese have food preferences, but they can cook whatever on the menu that the customer wants.

Only the most idiotic, misled Americans of Chinese descent would ever support such a smelly pile of totalitarian rubbish as China, especially a China mismanaged by the Han-jobs.

The Uyghurs have been a separate and captive people for 400 years, and the Tibetans for 50. Han-job China wishes to keep the land and reduce both populations to shining shoes and entertaining tourists as the minorities in SE China have been forced to do after 3000 years of Han-job occupation.

Burn China burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn!

Ask Kadeer how she got 11 children under one-child policy, how she became rich through lower tax and how two of her sons went to colleges with extra 50 scores added.
I do believe minority in CHina, not only Muslim, got some more preferantial treatment than Han.
Mr. Gladney sure knows better about China's minority policy and writes "one might even say it has become popular to be ‘ethnic’ in today’s China".

Sorta like how EVERY SINGLE HIGH LEVEL CCP slick haired "leader" of China has a kid or kids with FOREIGN passports...mostly from places that generally have due process and respect for rule-of-law??

lange,
Kadeer was born in 1947. The one-child policy was introduced around 1979.
That makes her aged approx. 32 or 33yrs old. Even assuming she was covered under the policy, she would likely have had many children by that age.

I'm sure many Han Chinese from that era (and probably social class) had tonnes of children by the age of 32 as well. (perhaps 11 is a lot but...).

Obviously what Lange was driving at was China allowed minorities more children. That is why "Han population grew 10% from 1982 to 1990, while the minority population grew 35% overall—from 67 million to 91 million" as Gladney wrote.
No doubt Han Chinese could "from that era had tonnes of children by the age of 32", though not 11 by Kadeer that reminds me of Ladin's mother, but muslim certainly have more children after the one-child policy was introduced in 1979.
.

oakwoods, Uighurs do have big families. In 1950, there were less than 2 million Uighurs in Xinjiang (probaly closer to 1.5 million), yet there are over 8 million Uighurs today. So the Uighur population has actually quatrupled or quitripled in over 50 years. Although Rebiya overdid it with 11 kids.

I checked and got to know Kadeer was born in 1951. So she obviously benefited from birth policy for minority. Here Kadeer told her own story from 8th minute on.

First of all, the sign says Han only need apply, which could be referenced to as Uigurs need not apply. China should crack down on such posters and notices and haul perpetuators to court for discrimination. Such overt form of discrimination is intolerable (even though Western countries practice a subtle form of discrimination). I will like to know which hotel this is. I have stayed in Kashgar at both the Seman Hotel and Qini Bagh hotels and both places have Uighur staff. The only place where I didn't see Uighur staff in the Qinibagh complex was at the "Chinese Restaurant". I have also stayed at the Oasis hotel in Turpan and they had Uighur staff as well. I did a tour to Xinjiang on a couple of occasions and the Cghinese agent provided 2 local guides, a Uighur and a Tajik. Both were very good. The driver was Han Chinese though.

Please elaborate on "(even though Western countries practice a subtle form of discrimination). "

BTW, I know you love the Seman Hotel

El Jefe, here is an example, hot off the press Jul 9!

Yes, I love the Seman Hotel, that's where I meet up with the naive white women backpackers. Of course, after being harrassed by the eyes and stares of Muslim men in the old city, a clean shaven and suave BBC1 is hard to resist. LOL!

Apples and oranges, but I wouldn't expect a fool to see the glaring difference. In the US, there is legal recourse, if it happens to be true. Does rule of law even exist in China?

The only LOL! is you stroking it to your MSN news page.

El Jefe, just admit you are pawned!

Sadly, I've been pawned like a gold watch.

Just amazing example, you try to argue and then insert your prejudice into the argument. Do I need to pay you now for making my point for me?

El Jefe, you folks never hesitate to insert your own prejudices. I am just giving you folks a taste of your own medicine. If you don't like what I have to say, then don't read my comments.

Here's the thing, when you retort after being called a name by calling that person the same thing, you look like a child. That's what children do.

BTW, I'm rubber and you're glue.

El Jefe, I know how it feels when the apple cart is overturned and the status quo is broken.

Muslim are funny people. When they hate CCP, they behead Han civilians; When neo-nazi slaughtered them in Dresden last week, they revenged on Chinese tourists in Munich, not to mention their hit on WTC when hating Bush.
