Pencil This In: Shanghaiist Happy Hour, the greening of China, and Dutch jazz photography

There's no reason to be bored this week, as Shanghai is offering plenty of options to keep you awake in this muggy heat. Take a stab at salsa dancing, crash a fusion jazz concert, listen to some lectures, just don't forget to stop by our Happy Hour on Tuesday and say bonjour!

Monday
The weather's certainly hot enough to warrant some sultry dancing, so maybe now is the time to check out Mural's weekly Subterranean Salsa Night. Learn some moves from the teachers on hand, then test them out to music by the live band.

If you're a Francophile looking for something a little more special (but maybe a little more low key than a six hour ladies' night) to do on Bastille Day, come to Cotton's on Xinhua Lu for our Shanghaiist Happy Hour. We'll have French tunes, French goodies to nibble on, and Pernod Richard drinks for only 25 RMB. All other Happy Hour prices will be the same as always, two drinks for the price of one.

Wednesday
Craving a midweek jazz concert? Check out the Shanghai Concert Hall when the Klingston Trio graces their stage. Comprised of a cellist, guitarist, and saxophonist from Joseph Haydn Conservatory of Burgenland in Austria, expect an evening of classical, pop, blues and jazz fusion.

For you business-y types, an MBA information session will be held at the Antai College of Economics and Management, in Jiaotong University. American professor Yahia Zoubir will be presenting on cross-culture negotiation skills for international managers.

Thursday
Interested in the environment and China's energy use? The folks at JUCCCE (Joint US-China Cooperation on Clean Energy) work with central and local government agencies to accelerate the greening of China with clean and efficient energy use. Hear behind-the-scenes stories from JUCCCE Chairperson and a Time Magazine Environmental Hero 2008, Peggy Liu, followed by an open forum discussion. Presented by Greenspace, drinks and light snacks will be provided.

Friday
For a mix of photography, jazz, and artsy Europeans, Kaiba, the Belgian Beer Bar, is hosting a photography exhibition opening by Frans Schellekens Fotografie. The exhibit, Jazz in Holland, features photos from the leading jazz events and venues in Holland in the '80s and '90s. The opening will feature drink specials and live music; the exhibition will last until August 18.
