China's most valuable asset of the year?
Yes, yes, we all know about the eclipse. Aside from that monumentous occasion, it's an international culture-fest this week in Shanghai, with lots of options to increase your worldliness: watch a Chinese documentary about an Italian filmmaker, catch a Finnish comedy at the German consulate, celebrate Belgian National Day, and enjoy some classical scores by a young Japanese violinist.
Monday
A documentary about a documentary: In 1972, an Italian director named Michelangelo Antonioni was invited to travel for eight weeks around China filming a documentary about the developing 'New China'. The end result, titled Chung Kuo, was labeled counter-revolutionary and banned until 2004. Tonight, the Broadband International Cineplex is showing China is Already Far Away, a documentary filmed by a Chinese couple who visited Antonioni and the people interviewed in his film, and puts Chung Kuo in historical context.

Wake up bright and early folks, and call in that personal day, 'cause the eclipse is coming, the eclipse is coming! Miss it, and you miss it for good. Need a place to watch it? Join us at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, where they'll have a breakfast special from 9-11 and Eno will be selling commemorative t-shirts a la ET. And cool as it may be, remember to protect your eyes!
Need something to do in the evening? You know the Monkey King- that story we've all heard so many times, the only way it could keep our interest was if it involved sort of magic and acrobats. Luckily for us, the Zhejiang Folk Art and Acrobatics Troupe is performing for four days at the Shanghai Grand Theatre doing just that. Watch the Monkey King battle the White Bone Demon and find a new admiration for (or less annoyance towards) Sun Wukong.

Wondering about the sustainability of this Expo that you keep hearing about? Net Impact China is presenting a panel of speakers discussing the environmental, social, and economic impact of the Expo, followed by a question and answer session.

So maybe you're not up for an American movie at an Austrian cafe- what about a Finnish movie at the German consulate? Helsinki Napoli All Night Long is a 1987 film about a Finnish cab driver living in Berlin with his Italian wife, and what happens when he finds a suitcase full of money and two dead gangsters in his taxi.

Of course, there's always the Friday concert to round out a week with class. Ryu Goto, considered one of Japan's most promising violinists and a student of renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin, will be performing a repetoire of Bizet, Paganini and Brahms at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center (you know, the butterfly-shaped one).
