Satirical U.S. joke paper The Onion is, for a reason not quite clear yet, doing a China special. Maybe they caught on to all the recent coverage of Chinese companies buying up Western media and decided that it'd be a perfect time to do their own spoof - sans any sensitive anniversaries or other events that would normally set off a decidedly humorless notice from the office of Qin Gang.
While the headlines are a lark, we'd give the satire itself a B. None of the articles themselves capture the true crazy genius of the foreign-targeted media in this country. We guess that after years of reading Xinhua and China Daily and all the rest of our state-owned English papers, we've found enough unintentional black comedy to render this attempt perhaps unintentionally depressing.

This week in Shanghaiist

Check out the website of the new "owner" of the Onion, Yu Wan Mei.
Brilliant, and funny.
Oh, that's a real company?
Maybe I've been in China too long but this "The Onion" Chinese edition seems only marginally more ridiculous than the actually press. Surprised they didn't spoof "2 bloggers arrested trying to defame rapist."
The Board of Directors of Yu Wan Mei was worth a chuckle re Ming Wei - Regional Scapegoat.
Actually, YuWanMei's fictional website looks better ---more professionally done---than some real Chinese companies' homepages......
But God the Chinese version of the YuWanMei site is awful... if you had any doubt if YWM is fictional ;-)
I just tried to take another look at this, but couldn't get through. Has The Onion now been GFW'd?! If so, that's even more hilarious
