Typhoon Morakot this way comes

Man the sails, Typhoon Morakot is heading our way! It hit Taiwan this morning and should be in China by Saturday, according to Reuters. Across the strait, Morakot is a category 2 storm (from a scale of 1-5), meaning it's medium strength, but whether it will stay that way before hitting China still seems to be unclear.

Reuters predicts that the storm will calm to a category 1 by the time it reaches our shores. Xinhua, on the other hand, reports the possibility that an even stronger typhoon may build up and last the entire weekend.

According to Xinhua:

The experts considered Morakot might have a big influence in the eastern part of Guangdong, and soak the province in torrential rains. The eighth tropical storm this year, Morakot was formed on the heels of Goni, which unleashed downpours in Guangdong destroying 732 houses.

"The two storms could influence each other," said Wang Zhenming, vice head of the Zhejiang provincial meteorological station. "As a result, the route of Morakot is not fully predictable." He warned Morakot was likely to continue growing in strength and become a super typhoon.

Regardless of what the outcome may be, coastal Chinese cities aren't taking any chances. No strangers to typhoons, cities in Zhejiang and Fujian province are already calling ships back to harbor, evacuating tourists out of potential danger zones, and sending mass texts informing citizens to find shelter and brace for impact.
