Weekend Music Preview: Led Zep covers, J-rock covers, and experimental jam sessions

The word this weekend is "Covers." First on Friday, The Rovers will be doing covers of seminal rock legends Led Zeppelin and then on Saturday, Live Bar will be hosting a couple hours of J-Rock reinterpretations. We're not sure why there's so much mimicry going on - but we guess it's a way to make sure you'll like exactly what you're listening to.

In case you want to take a walk on the wild side though, there's also YYT's Our Psychedelic Travel 3.0, which promises some of the brightest stars in China's experimental rock scene. Be forewarned, things are bound to get weird.

FRIDAY

Like 70s rock? Who doesn't? Shanghai band The Rovers will spend tonight doing Led Zeppelin covers with supporting band, The Snots. We were there the last time The Rovers channeled Led Zeppelin and they completely rocked the three songs they played, so we'd love to see what playlist they've got planned for an entire night.
¥30, 9PM, YYT on 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

Us beat-chasers are a fan of The Lab's DJ Fortune, who'll be making the mix CD for this month's PAUSE:PLAY. The release party will also feature special guest As-One, a UK graffiti and street artist, and music from V-Nutz, Shreddi, Santo Chino and others.
¥30, 10PM, The Shelter on 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号

SATURDAY

Live Bar is bringing an afternoon of J-Rock, which should get all us anime nerds in a tizzy. Bands include Beat generation 1980s, VO. Haku, GT. Kiddo, BA. Seven777, and DR. Osiki playing music from various animes as well as L'Arc~en~Ciel, Hyde, Luna Sea and others. Starts at 2pm

Speaking of daytime doings, the Channel One summer music series is still happening, with Little Nature and Sonnet playing on Saturday. It's a great way to check out some of the coolest bands in Shanghai in an a/ced location, while getting some shopping done on the side.
Channel One: Free, 1:30pm and 6pm, 155 Changshou Lu, near Shaanxi Bei Lu, 长寿路155号近陕西北路

After that, you can choose to head to Shelter for some sweltering drum & bass. Total Science, a UK electronic beat duo, makes their China debut tonight. They'll be joined by MC Riya.
¥50, 10PM, The Shelter on 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号

Or, if you're feeling a little more weird, Our Psychedelic Travel 3.0 has come to YYT. Acoelomate Goats 无体腔山羊 (from Beijing), MTDM Quartet 没腿的马 (Shanghai) and Duck Fight Goose 鸭战鹅 (Shanghai) will be bringing a show much different from the more traditional rock scene. Stay for the jam session afterwards.
¥30, 9PM, YYT on 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

SUNDAY

The third Sunday of the Channel One summer music series kicks off with a return of Da Fresh and Momo. If you missed them during the first weekend, catch them now.
Channel One: Free, 1:30pm and 6pm, 155 Changshou Lu, near Shaanxi Bei Lu, 长寿路155号近陕西北路

Then ease it up with the simple folk sounds of Bai Shui. He'll be bringing his take on Sichuan ballads and Chinese rural ambient music to Yu Yin Tang. It sounds relaxing.

Video is of Led Zeppelin playing "The Rover"... twist!
