This week was sick with the flu week over here at Shanghaiist, but now that the fever's gone down and the coughing has slowed, we. are. ready. to. party... *cough* Okay, maybe we shouldn't party TOO hard (our mothers would get mad).
This week offers a good balance between those of us who like live shows and those of us who like DJs. Several venues are hosting Chinese rock nights of various flavors (girl punk at Live Bar 696 on Friday, new names at Live Bar Kunming Lu on Saturday, and some psychobilly at YYT too). Also, we see the launch of Kiss my DJ and VOID celebrates its 2nd birthday. Awww, the terrible twos!
FRIDAY
Friday night is Girl Power night at 696 Weihai Lu. Chinese all-girl acts Blue Fantasy, Wednesday and Double Smile will be offering up a mix of rock and punk at this new art compound live venue. We're hoping for at least one Bikini Kill cover.
¥30, 9pm, Live Bar, #103 Building 11, 696 Weihai Lu, 威海路696弄11号103近茂名路
South Beauty's Yan'an Lu locations has one of the greatest rooftops in town, so we guess there's as good a place as any to throw a DJ party. Kiss My DJ Asia will be having their official launch party there, with classy house/tec-house/electro from DJs VinX & E.San. And it's free.
South Beauty, 881 Yan'an Zhong Lu near Tongren Lu, 延安中路881号
SATURDAY
The ever hard working VOID is celebrating its second anniversary at the Shelter with a line-up including MHP and Shanghai Ultra, Nat Alexander, Fish, Ben Huang and B6.
¥30, 10PM, The Shelter on 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号
Meanwhile, at the far away Live Bar, four Chinese bands will be rocking out in "Night of Crossroad." Tjak, Reige, Esday and Double Free are on the bill. It should be fun for people who want to check out some new Chinese rock bands.
¥30, 9PM, Live Bar, 721 Kunming Lu, near Tongbei Lu, 昆明路721号近通北路
Speaking of Chinese rock bands, The Mushrooms will be hosting a night of mayhem at YYT. They've brought over Angry Jerks from Nanjing, so you'll see a little punk/psychobilly on the bill as well.
¥30, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)
Or if you're a fan of Degrassi Junior High (and if you're not, you just haven't watched it yet), go over to LOgO for their Mix Tape night. Happy Music: bad grunge, 80s jams, early rap, Richard Marx slow jams, and more. Like all your shameful 8th grade memories, it's free.
9pm, LOgO, 13 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu. 幸福路13号, 近法华镇路
