  • On the Rarity of Foreign Women and Chinese Boyfriends/Chinese Husbands [Speaking of China] "When I’m in China, I tend to turn a lot of heads, especially in the countryside — and that’s not just because I’m a foreigner. It’s because I’m often seen holding hands with my Chinese husband. It’s true — the sight of a foreign woman and Chinese boyfriend or Chinese husband is much rarer than its counterpart, the foreign man and Chinese woman."
  • Tim’s Texas Roadhouse, R.I.P. [WSJ] "Roadhouse proprietor Tim Hilbert, who arrived before 9 a.m., was barred from entering, forced to watch the preparations from outside. Since the Journal’s article on Hilbert Aug. 24, he’d been forced to cancel his planned “beer, barbeque, and blues” party - which he billed as a good-will gesture to local officials - because police were afraid it would turn into a mass protest. Hilbert received several inquiries from Chinese reporters about his predicament since the Journal article ran, and articles were published, but he continued to be frustrated in his efforts to seek more compensation from local courts and other government offices."
  • China's newest lead poisoning investigation underway in Kunming [Go Kunming] "More than 200 children in Kunming's Dongchuan district have been found to have unsafe levels of lead in their blood, the third major case of child lead poisoning in China this month. During routine blood testing in Dongchuan's Tongdu county, more than 200 out of 1,000 children tested were found to have blood lead levels of more than 100 micrograms per liter."
  • A Hired Gun for Microsoft, in Dogged Pursuit of Google [NY Times] "Qi Lu knows as well as anyone just how difficult it is to take on Google. For nearly a decade, Mr. Lu played a leading role in building Yahoo’s Internet search and advertising technologies. The effort was so important that Yahoo backed it with billions of dollars to acquire companies, hire armies of engineers and develop and run its own systems. Yet Yahoo fell further and further behind and many analysts said the company was simply outgunned by Google. Mr. Lu, who is 47, left Yahoo 14 months ago, but now finds himself once again leading the charge against Google. This time, he is backed by a patron that vows to spend even more than Yahoo did on the mission: Microsoft."
  • Dalai Lama begins Taiwan visit [Al Jazeera] "The Dalai Lama has arrived in Taiwan on a visit that has been denounced by China as being likely to destabalise improving ties with Taipei. The Tibetan Buddhist leader landed at Taoyuan International Airport on Monday for what he called a "purely humanitarian" trip aimed at comforting victims of Typhoon Morakot."
  • Beijing begins to monitor Tian'anmen Square weather [China Daily] "Beijing began monitoring weather in the Tian'anmen Square area round the clock from Saturday in preparation for China's 60th National Day, said an official with the Beijing Municipal Meteorological Bureau Sunday. The weather forecast for a one-kilometer area around the square will be broadcast every day from now on until the National Day celebrations are completed, said Guo Hu, head of the Beijing Municipal Meteorological Observatory."
  • Adoptee revisits Chinese birth family [Baltimore Sun] "The father fell to his knees weeping in a dramatic display of grief and contrition. The mother quietly buried her face in her hands. The 17-year-old boy, returning to China for the first time since he was adopted by a Maryland woman eight years ago, stood upright and motionless - whether out of shock or stoicism - with the only dry eye in the room. The interpreter stood quietly on the sidelines waiting for what seemed an eternity in which nobody spoke an intelligible word in any language. There were only sobs and the clicking of the cameras."
