Back in the day, before Tong Ren Lu became the predominant strip of seediness for Shanghai, we would cruise down Julu Lu and Maoming Lu for our dose of pointing at old expats trying to get laid (as well as some drinks and partying, of course). We went into a fit of depression when Maoming Lu lost its luster five or six years ago. And now we must bid goodbye to Julu Lu as well. Urbanatomy reports that the street is nothing but "hollow shells wallowing in clouds of asbestos dust" now, probably thanks to one of the city's many initiatives to clean itself up. New York lost part of its charm when those XXX theaters on Times Square closed. Is Shanghai going to be more boring from now on too?

This week in Shanghaiist

Julu actually isn't dead and gone. It's just relocating, or at least that seemed to be the plan. If you go right down Julu Lu to the end near Chengdu Lu, what first appears to be a park actually holds a secret. If you descend down you'll find a neo-classical, polished lair, just waiting for vice to descend. It has to be seen to be believed.
By the way, Tongren lu will be heading the same way pretty soon....
Does this mean Velvet is no more? or relocating too?
This is called 'harmonization'.
Fortunately that "if Shanghai going to be more boring from now on" or if it is "harmonization" is not decided by expats.
So you'll have to travel into the interior to see twisted, degenerate old expats in their native habitat...talking bars.
"...we would cruise down Julu Lu and Maoming Lu for our dose of pointing at old expats trying to get laid"
Did that provide enough of a boost to your apparently low self-esteem?
What ever happened to "Live and let live"?
