While this week has quite a couple of good music picks, the ones we're most excited about is... of course... the Handsome Furs. We love Wolf Parade, and Dan Boeckner surprised us by showing that he and his wife could churn out equally decent music (because, come on, couples rocking? When had that been anything but a recipe for disaster?).
So yes, the video is from Youtube, and yes, Youtube is still blocked. We've outlined so many different ways for you to get around the GFW though that you really ought to have no problem.
So check them out on Saturday. If you're afraid of the crowd at YYT though (understandable, we wish it was at a bigger venue too), there's other musical adventures you can partake in this weekend. They are listed below.
FRIDAY
Remember how the DMC Championships scratched its way to Shanghai a few weeks ago? The winner of the China division, DJ HBD, will be playing at the Shelter on Friday for PAUSE:PLAY. He'll be joined by Ozone, Pony Boys and Drunk Monk.
¥30, 10PM, The Shelter on 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号
Strobolight, a four-piece indie post-rock band who met in Oxford University will be strumming their post-rocky music at YuyinTang.
¥40, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)
Meanwhile, Liu Haishen, a "legendary artist" who's integrated bruce, funk, metal, rock and other musical elements over the 20 years of his career will be hanging out at Live Bar.
¥30, 9:30pm, Live Bar, 721 Kunming Lu, near Tongbei Lu, 昆明路721号近通北路
SATURDAY
We were super psyched about this when we heard about it, and now it's finally here - the Handsome Furs, an indie rock duo project of Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his wife Alexei Perry, will be playing at YuyinTang. Boys Climbing Ropes will open. We'll be there and you should too.
¥80 at the door, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)
Brrrchmp ba brrchmp. Okay, we're done. But if you want to hear a real live beat box/DJ duo, Antidote is presenting The Super Milkmen at the Shelter on Saturday. They're from the U.K-k-k-kay.
¥40, 10PM, The Shelter on 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号
Or if you're more into braaains than beats, Not Me is doing a DANCE TIL YOU'RE DEAD: ZOMBIES UNITE! party. "As the city of Shanghai sleeps, they rise from the pugent sewers to lick people's brains out of their eyeholes and tear limbs off the living," they say. Gross... but cool! 2 for 1 drinks discount from 9pm - 11pm.
Free, Not Me, 21 Dong Ping Lu near Hengshan Lu, 东平路21号近衡山路
Three young folk artists from Shanghai, Beijing and New York will share their stories and their music. It's a one night only deal at Top Floor in the French Concession.
¥30, ¥20 for students, 8pm, Top Floor, No.1 Wulumuqi Nan Rd. (across from the American Consulate) 顶层画廊,乌鲁木齐南路甲一号二楼
SUNDAY
On Sunday, Beijing-based Glamorous Pharmacy will be bringing its experimental art rock to YuyinTang. Some band members used to belong to the legendary Chinese folk group Wild Children, and they've since taken the notion of Chinese folk to experimental extremes. They apparently put on a great live show.
¥80 at the door, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)
