UFOs and eclipses, the truth is out there

Scientists at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing supposedly caught footage of a UFO in the sky during July's solar eclipse. A UFO and an eclipse in the same day? What luck!

The director of the observatory, Ji Hai-sheng, told sina.com that scientists would not be speculating publicly on the nature of what was captured on film until it had been properly studied.

He added:"'Purple Mountain Observatory and Chinese Academy of Sciences said that during the July 22 total solar eclipse observation, China had discovered near the sun, by observing staff, an unidentified object, it's physical nature remains to be further studied.

"Currently manpower is being organized to deal with this data, complete the data analysis and reveal the scientific results and this will take at least one year's time to finalise."

We got excited when we read that the observatory had 40 minutes of footage of an actual UFO, but it turns out that the Telegraph mistranslated an earlier article from bjnews.com.

In actuality, there's 40 minutes of eclipse footage, which will be diligently studied, and only a minute or so of UFO footage. The scientists at the observatory think that the UFO was probably fragmented bits of stars, which would be a logical explanation.

But like the Telegraph, we would rather stick to imaginative science fiction and pretend like there are aliens in China (besides us). Who knows, it could have been an exceptionally clever viral marketing campaign for a new Stephen Chow movie!
