What do the NFL, small Chinese children, and a Taiwanese rock band have in common? Absolutely nothing, until the NFL decided to embark on its latest effort to make professional American football popular in China.
While they’ve already started showing games on local Chinese television, it seems like the NFL thinks the best way to convince the Chinese public to love America’s favorite pastime is to combine it with America’s other favorite pastime — reality TV.
The NFL has commissioned a show called NFL Blitz starring the Taiwanese rock band Mayday. Because when we think of football, we think of boy band members who weigh between 130-170 pounds, of which the tallest member (Ashin) tops out at 5-foot-9.
The show will run on CCTV starting in the fall, and the 16 episode series will run through the Super Bowl. In it, the band travels around the U.S. East Coast doing football related activities: talking to cheerleaders, meeting a high school band, visiting the NFL corporate office in New York, and finally, in the last episode, even playing their first game of football!
