Weekend Music Preview: Mao Livehouse Shanghai, GBOB Challenge, and other beats

maolivehouse.jpg Oh what a weekend for music. Hopefully, you didn't miss out on the Antidote 4th anniversary party yesterday at C's, but in case you did, there's still a ton of other great music events to hit up.

On Friday, you get to choose between experimental rock, LA hardcore, or Hong Kong twee-pop, depending on your mood. Then on Saturday, Mao Livehouse, the project/live music club by indie-label Soma is finally opening its doors with some of our favorite Shanghai bands! Come in for the great music and some prizes sponsored by Casio.

And if that wasn't enough, Sunday sees the Global Battle of the Bands competition - whether or not you agree with their methods, we hope you'll support the kids who do show up to play their gigs. We'll be part of the judging panel.

FRIDAY

If Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Portishead could somehow reproduce together to form a two-unit child, they may resemble something very like MONORAL. Check out this Japanese rock band on both Friday and Saturday at the Zhijiang Dream Factory.

If you're looking for happy, clappy affairs, Hong Kong-based My Little Airport will be making an appearance at Brown Sugar. Their music is twee (voted "Twee-est Band" at allmusic.com in 2007), and they have a wicked streak that is as funny as it is naughty, with songs about porn.
¥TBA, 8:30 PM, Brown Sugar: Bldg 15, Xintiandi North Block, Lane 181 Taicang Lu 太仓路181弄新天地北里15号

Jazz vocalist "Boy Billie Holiday From China" Coco Zhao takes the stage at Cabaret to croon a few smooth songs while guests enjoy the 'Buy two, get one free' deal on bottles of Pommery. Chinese traditional music, western classical music, and jazz: what could be better?
