- China's Worsening Water Crisis [Forbes] "China is facing an extremely severe water resources problem. This year, northern China is experiencing a huge drought, and it is a warning bell. Solving our worsening water problem is a difficult undertaking the Chinese government and people can no longer avoid. Since entering a period of rapid economic growth 30 years ago, China has had at its disposal only 7% of the world's arable land to meet the needs of 20% of the world's population. It has had to utilize these scare land resources with relatively low average per-capita water supplies and backward technology."
- A conversation with China's young Communists [CNN] "When we requested an interview with members of the Communist Youth League, I expected an army of suits with well-rehearsed answers. Instead, we met three students casually dressed in jeans, just 18 to 23 years old.The interview was arranged by the State Council Information Office, in advance of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China."
- Beijing gets ready for H1N1 inoculations [China Daily] "Beijing is gearing up for a mass H1N1 flu inoculation of young students as its previous vaccination of hundreds of thousands of Chinese nationwide proved to be safe. No "serious adverse reactions" were detected among the recipients, the country's health minister, Chen Zhu, said Monday at a press conference, without elaborating on the definition of serious adverse reaction."
- China Inc. Looks Homeward as U.S. Shoppers Turn Frugal [WSJ] "With the longtime engine of global growth, the American consumer, pummeled by recession, some of China's hugely productive exporters are eyeing a new market: the Chinese. Bicycle manufacturer Tandem Industries has long supplied big overseas retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. But Tandem's American sales have tumbled 40% since September 2008, the month a U.S. credit squeeze turned into a credit panic. So Tandem is about to offer its bikes to riders in its home province, Guangdong, under its own brand and at its own stores."
- Taiwan teen chops off father's hands, cites abuse [AP] "A 17-year-old Taiwanese boy has been arrested for chopping off his father's hands, allegedly to avenge years of physical abuse, a police official said Tuesday. The boy cut through his father's wrists with a knife while he was asleep at the family's home in central Miaoli on Monday, the official said. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity, citing department policy."
- Volcker Says China’s Rise Highlights Relative U.S. Decline [Bloomberg] "Former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker said the rise of China and other emerging economies has underscored a decline in the comparative economic and intellectual leadership of the U.S. “I don’t know how we accommodate ourselves to it,” Volcker, an economic adviser to President Barack Obama, said in an interview with PBS’s Charlie Rose taped yesterday in New York. “You cannot be dependent upon these countries for three to four trillion dollars of your debt and think that they’re going to be passive observers of whatever you do.”"
