Threesday: Mad Men, True Blood, and 30 Rock

mad_men_small-711670.png In our new Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well... whatever catches their fancy that week. This week: Three Emmy-winning shows that you can stream from the Chinese internet.

We have always felt that it is far more rewarding to watch people live out life experiences on television than to actually create life experiences of our own. In that light, just in time for you to crash on a couch for National Day vacation, our first Threesday will showcase three shows we love and where to find them. With the next eight days giving us all vast amounts of free time on our hands, here are three great reasons to relax, avoid human interaction and enjoy some quality television.

  1. Mad Men - Excessive drinking, the 1960s, sex, and advertising. Showing on AMC this drama follows the life of Don Darper, the creative director at the fictional Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency on Madison Avenue (get it? MAD Men) in 1960s New York. Mad Men has won the 9 Emmys and 3 Golden Globes. We wish we could be this effortlessly cool and collected. It is probably best to start from the beginning so you can understand what exactly is happening in this show.

There have been two complete seasons so far and right now we're about halfway through the third one. Youku.com has the complete first and second season but we had to dig around a bit to find the partial third season. On Youku.com the other episodes in the season are listed on the right and on megastic.com they're all listed at the bottom.

    Season 1

    Season 2
    Season 3

  3. True Blood - So we love anything that involves dirty sex, not only does HBO's True Blood have that, it has freaky dirty sex. The show focuses on Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. In this reality, vampires exist and have just publicly "come out of the coffin" and are functioning members of society. You need to give this show a chance, we watched the first two episodes and we like whatever what wanted to know what happened next. Now we can't stop watching. Do not just jump into this show wherever, start from the beginning or you will be totally lost.

We found the first season on youku.com and the second on tudou.com, just click the links and they will take you to the first episode. On Youku.com the other episodes in the season are listed on the right and on tudou.com they are on the bottom of the screen.

    Season 1

    Season 2

  5. 30 Rock - Winner of the 2009 Emmy for Best Comedy Series, 30Rock centers on the life of Liz Lemon as she produces The Girly Show starring Tracy Jordan. We think this show is hilarious, it parodies corporate America, the working schlep, and all sort s of things we all deal with in a daily life. Albeit funnier, because it's on tv and starts Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. You can bounce around with this show, but there is a clear plot line that carries over through the season.

Season 1 and 3 we found on megastic.com; however, they only had an incomplete version of Season 2 so we found that season on Tudou.com.

    Season 1
    Season 2
    Season 3

We hope you enjoy melting your brain this holiday as much as we will! These sites are usually up and running fine, but this is China so who knows what could happen. At the end of the day there is usually a guy selling them for 5 RMB DVDs around the corner.
