Leo Gallery: PRC art through the decades

We were sad to see National Day celebrations come and go in the blink of an eye, after months of ridiculous and awesome preparation. But now we've found an outlet for our grief - The Leo Gallery is in the process of showing a new exhibit, "1949-2009: 60 Years of Chinese Contemporary Art."

The Leo Gallery has showcased some great contemporary and international works, and we're excited to look back at old man PRC's 60 years of unique history in this newest exhibition of Chinese artists. As they put it:

One of the most remarkable aspects of art is its ability to chronicle moments in history through creative expression. During the Cultural Revolution, China's artists were enlisted for the singular purpose of uniting the people of the young republic. Their efforts have produced an encyclopedia of visual vocabulary from which today's leading contemporary artists can draw from. The exhibition 1949 - 2009 celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Chinese contemporary art.

The exhibit features the work of Huang Gang, Wang Guangyi, Sui Jianguo, Zhang Xiaogang, and Hong Hao, all artists born during Mao's regime. It chronicles how the Cultural Revolution and Mao first influenced then incited reaction from Chinese artists, including modern perspectives of Mao's policies.
