Jackie Chan may be an adorable and well-liked kung fu superstar, but he sure doesn't seem to know when it's time to stop talking. We've recorded several of his gaffes before, including one made earlier this year when he insinuated that Chinese need to be controlled... but this latest interview really takes the cake.
The Youtube video shows a Taiwan TV news report that was reproducing CCTV's interview with the megastar. It was translated by ESWN:
Chan: Our generation is so lucky because of what we run into. China has never been better in the last 5,000 years. Great unity ... everything is good. Even the heavens are helping us. The call went out: "Everybody stand up and sing the national anthem!" You hear that ... (making the sound of music) ... Wow, it was unbearable. The tears. Really.(note: the reference to "the heavens" is about how the weather in Beijing turned good in the morning of October 1st. The television host was embarrassed and had to inform him that more than 400 rockets were fired to disperse an incoming bank of clouds.)
(the voice over said that Jackie Chan was sitting in the first row of the audience at the Tiananmen parade)
Chan: The impulse. I saw our Chairman Hu come down. I really wanted to rush over to shake his hand. But I know that even before I can stretch my hand out, there would already be "Bang Bang Bang."TV hostess: There won't be.
(the voice over said that Jackie Chan then switched over to condemn the wave of immigration out of Hong Kong before the colony was returned to China. In so doing, he glossed over the fact that his wife lives in the United States and his son was born there and therefore an American citizen.)
Chan: You see, at the time I cursed them out. I said that those of you who leave are not Chinese. Now every one of them is back. They came back on their own. Chinese nationality is the most difficult to obtain around the world. You go anywhere else and you can buy citizenship with money. In China, you cannot even get it with money. This is why us China is awesome.
Yikes. Global Voices Online translated some reactions to the extended outburst, which ranged from anger at his "fascist" viewpoints to amusement that he might have been referencing a certain massacre with the "bang bang bang" comment.
Personally, what we were most offended by: That mustache.

Jackie Chan is a pop star, and thus has popular opinions. Ask around, the man on the street will tell you the same things. The only difference is that he gets airtime, but that's a fault of the media.
Seems like everyboody in this forum is still 13 y.o, taking mediocre actors as role models and exacting from them to behave as such. Only much more bilious than the average 13 y.o.

I agree with lasecondababele to the extent that Jackie echoes the man on the street. Jackie isn't saying anything that a lot of the public isn't already saying, or secretly believe. Furthermore, when he states his opinions, he is also being his own clownish self. Having said that, Jackie needs to learn that he's in the public eye. And, like it or not, he is an unofficial ambassador for the Chinese people. He needs to think before he talks. And he needs to learn how to speak more diplomatically. He has said that he grew up with little formal education, and among the working class. That he has achieved his level of success is to his merit. But, now, he needs to raise it to a higher level and keep learning to be more polished. And, by the way, on a side note, who are those sycophants, if any, that continue to support his singing? Do any people close to him tell him that he cannot sing?
