Weekendist: Artist Mao Yanyang, Djs at Dada, Alan Greig's solo choreography

mao yanyang.jpg Culture yourself during the day and dance away the night! This weekend has a line up of thoughtful speakers and exhibits, including photographer Thomas Fuesser and painter Mao Yanyang.

That's right, every night, party hard wild child. Or if you'd prefer a seat to a room full of strangers groping you, check out one of the various dance performances lined up for this weekend.

Friday: Chino Latino + Lost Treasures of Modern China + Dirty Party

Find yourself often pondering the effects of globalization on people's lives? Don't worry, you're not a dork. Photographer Thomas Fuesser will give an introduction to "Lost Treasures of Modern China," an exhibition of Chinese artists (such as Zhou Tiehai) that satirize the role of western media, and will discuss the influence of the foreign media on the Chinese art world over the past two decades. The exhibit also features Fuesser's own, until recent, unpublished photographs from a 1993 visit documenting the Beijing art scene.

6pm-7:30pm. ShanghART Gallery. 796 Huaihai Zhong Lu just west of Ruijin Lu No cover, RSVP to jane@shanghartgallery.com.

Wind down with DJs elnomo and Melkman's Latin beats and mojito drink specials at Dada Bar. The night boasts so many hyphenated ethnic dance mixes that it must be eclectic: groove to classic and electro-cumbia, super salsa, Brazilian-tropicalia, Afro-Caribbean and Latin soul.

9pm to late. Dada Bar. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu in the French Concession No cover.

Feel like getting Dirrrty... maybe without the extra Rs? S.T.D. is teaming up with Beijing electro-wizards Liman + Sulumi to mash together an array of electronic music plus over-the-top performances. We're not sure what about that makes it dirty, but it's called a Dirty Party and we love anything that sounds like it's made with olive juice.

9PM to late. The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, No cover.

Saturday: Into the Light + Mao Yanjang @ 20,000 hz + Slick 50

If you're not into the lingering National Day-themed exhibits and shows around the city, check out artist Mao (the other one) Yanyang's work this weekend at Art Scene Warehouse. Yanyang explores various social, cultural, and political problems ranging from the injustices of war to the morality of objective media coverage. Keep an eye out for microphones, a theme through out his work.

Oct 10 to Oct 23, 10am-6:30pm. Art Scene Warehouse.

Alan Greig, choreographer, dancer, and art director of the X Factor Dance Company, is coming to Shanghai for the first time, and he'll be performing a collection of solo works he has created over the last two decades. The seven acts incorporate film, original compositions, and props, and range from funny parody (a sequence that parodies the music and dance of pop diva Kate Bush's) to thoughtful and imaginative (everything else!).

7:30-8:30pm. Shanghai Theatre Academy. Tickets 150RMB.

Australian impresario Slick 50 will be going to DaDa to play "off-beat danger jazz mixed with smooth smack grooves and freestyle soundscapes" in his first ever China Tour. Sound exciting? We thought so.

9pm to late. Dada Bar. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu in the French Concession No cover.

Sunday: Santo's Sunday Disco

The old, the weird, and the eclectic are all welcome. DJ Santo Chino is putting a new twist on disco, opting for an eclectic mix of older, weirder, and newer overlooked disco rather than the more traditional 70s disco anthems. Check it out for a new spin on your night out in Shanghai.

Sundays, 10pm to late. No cover.
