2 days…3 stages…37 bands…20 DJs….What better than the hard facts to advertise an event as noteworthy as the upcoming JZ Shanghai Music Festival? From October 16th to the 18th, Pudong Century Park will play host to a constant stream of artists set to fill the city with music. Don’t be fooled by the festival’s name- one might be quick to assume that a jazz festival would be monopolized by the baritone sax and Louis Armstrong tribute performances, but each of the three stages actually specializes in a subset of music.
While one stage is dedicated to Jazz, another is set to host Rock and Folk music while the last will have Electrograss music. Clearly there are music genres within genres here, and while we cannot for the life of me tell Shanghaiist readers what ‘electrograss’ means, we can guarantee that the wide spectrum of music will have something to tickle most everyone’s fancy.
The only frustration may be that with so many options in the same bracket of time, festival-goers will have to make some tough decisions on what to forgo and what to see.
Dee Dee Bridgewater, one of the most recognizable modern jazz singers around, will frontline the festival’s opening ceremony at Yunfeng Theater on Friday, October 16th beginning at 8:30pm. The festival begins in full form the next morning (Saturday, October 17th) with performances on all three of the Pudong Park stages running from 1:00pm well into the evening. Sunday follows the same timeline, though the festival will end on a high note with much-anticipated performances by Catherine Lambert, Us3, and Ben Huang. The festival performances also include local favorite Phreaktion Crew and South Africa’s Freshlyground, among others.
For those who will not yet be experiencing music overload in the wee hours of the night, each day the JZ Festival activities will end with an after-party at JZ Club and Cotton Club. After all, jazz is founded on a tradition of boozing and lamenting scorned lovers- who would we be to break tradition?
