If you're feeling warm and generous, there's multiple chances to give back to the community this week, be it through flea market shopping, beer drinking, or wine tasting. After you stimulate the social economy a bit, indulge your international side with writers from Ireland, a comedian from New Zealand, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Monday: Charity flea market, Foosball tournament
Head to Jing'an for a flea market offering homemade food, crafts, clothes, toys, art, and other flea market-y things. Entry fee is at least a 1 RMB donation; proceeds go to Stepping Stones China, a charity that assists students in migrant schools with their English skills. FYI, all profits at the stalls go to the vendor, so splurge at the door and haggle on the floor.
9 AM-5 PM. Ends Wednesday. 800 Show, 4/F Building 9, 800 Changde Rd, south of Changping Lu
You've seen pool tournaments and beer pong tournaments, so naturally it's time for a Shanghai foosball tournament. The Spot is hosting a weekly tourney and offering a 300 RMB voucher to the victor. There's no cover and all players get a drink deal. No harm in trying, is there?
Starts at 8 PM. The Spot, 331 Tongren Lu near Beijing Xi Lu (铜仁路331号 近北京西路)
Tuesday: Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Coming all the way from their famous Opera House, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra hits up Shanghai in their first Asia Tour in 13 years. He comes to Shanghai fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to entertain you for one night only at Malone's. If you're unsure about shelling out the dough for a comedian you've never heard of, get a taste of his musings on his website.

Friday: Irish writers, Charity wine tasting
Just because you live in China doesn't mean you can't spend an evening in an Irish pub discussing Irish culture. Le Cheile, the Irish community association, is hosting a night with two highly acclaimed modern Irish artists: playwright Conal Creedon and the (surprisingly young) poet Leanne O'Sullivan. Both will read aloud from their works and answer questions from the audience.
8-10 PM. The Irishman's Pub, No. 20, Lane 199, Fangdian Lu at Thumb Plaza (芳甸路199弄20号 大拇指广)
In under two years, The Library Project has completed over 170 library donations to under-financed schools and orphanages and is constantly working to donate more. Help support their efforts to donate a library to Wei Lou Elementary School in Anhui Province by attending a wine tasting at Mesa-Manifesto. Four Italian wines will be featured, and a drawing will be held for prizes donated by the Marriot, Le Royal Meridien, and more. Extra details can be found on their flyer.
