"Prison Break: The Final Break," but for real in real China

prison break.jpg After a manhunt involving over six thousand security personnel, three of the four escaped convicts were captured and apprehended in a raid today, while the last was shot and killed, says China Daily.

The four convicts escaped from the number two prison in Hohhot, the capital city of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, this past Saturday afternoon, and fatally wounded a police officer in securing their departure. The men, aged 21-28, fled south in two hijacked taxis from Hohhot and were approaching Shanxi province Monday afternoon, but then turned around and headed northwest to Shebiya. Two of them were on death row on manslaughter charges, while the other two were serving life sentences for armed robbery, says Danwei.

China Daily provides a rather comprehensive graphic of how the prison break occurred (we especially liked the details about how each prisoner boarded the getaway taxi). According to Tang Ji, chief law reporter with Xinhua News Agency's Inner Mongolia bureau, this all has been a "negligent accident on the part of prison management," and "modern monitoring facilities and heavy police detachments should make it impossible for inmates to escape."

That's all well and good, but what we're curious about is what China's many Prison Break enthusiasts are thinking now... what with their vehement commentary and passionate commitment for subtitling. Today's capture did not involve Michael "the handsome" Scofield, but maybe now there will be some progress on that $1.2 million Chinese Prison Break project...
