- Also appearing in Shanghai is New Zealand comedian Ray Bon Kan (yes, he's bffs with Flight of the Conchords). He'll be at Malones on Thursday at 8pm. Figures one of the few times Shanghai has a bunch of comedians play, they force you to choose between them. [Shanghai Talk]
- Pollution levels were (shockingly) higher than usual, according to recent reports. Apparently for the past 3 days we have experienced poorer air quality than any other time of the year and yet, oddly enough, it doesn't seem to be bothering people like pollution normally does. - Well this is a bummer: White Horse Inn, one of the prettiest buildings of the former Jewish district in Hongkou, was taken down over the holiday week despite efforts to convince the local government to preserve it. Better City by erasing all of its past? [China Rhyming
- Another case of counterfeiting gone bad and perhaps an instance that is a bit closer to the heart for a lot of people, is fake cigarettes. While fake cigarettes are nothing new, the quantity of contraband found was fairly substantial. Roughly 1 million RMB of them were found in a warehouse in Zhabei District. [Shanghai Daily]
- The world's largest oil tanker was christened in Shanghai this weekend. The Jiu Hua San was built by the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd for the Singapore-based Ocean Tankers Pte Ltd. The largest city in China produces one of the world's largest ships, the world goes round once again. [China Daily]
