With Halloween days away, we know it's hard to think about anything besides the awesome costumes and parties that lay ahead. So here are some suggestions to make the days go by faster this week, including jazz nights, handball, and of course, the Scrabblelicious Shanghaiist Happy Hour!
Monday: Handball
If you haven't noticed by now, Shanghai offers some non-traditional sports: Gaelic football, Ultimate Frisbee...and now Handball. Not the boring American kind where you throw a ball against a wall, but the European, seven-on-seven, awesome Olympics version. Anyway, the guys (and hopefully more ladies!) meet every Monday to do about an hour of training followed by an hour of game-time. All nationalities and skill levels are welcome, and there are showers at the campus so you don't go for post-practice drinks smelling naaasty. Tuesday: Shanghaiist Scrabble Happy Hour
Show off your Scrabble prowess at this week's Shanghaiist Happy Hour, featuring a custom-made 31 x 31 Scrabble board! It's the same Happy Hour you know and love, with fun company and 2-for-1 drinks, but this time you'll get five Scrabble tiles to play with for every drink. Turn the tiles into words on our giant board and the person with the most points at the end of the night wins a ¥250 drink voucher at Cotton's! Which, of course, you could use at our next Shanghaiist Scrabble night....

Wednesday: A Swinging Affair, Old Movie Jazz Concert
Head back to Cotton's as they kick off A Swinging Affair featuring Theo Croker and his jazz quartet, whom you might have heard perform at last week's jazz festival. They'll be playing live trumpet, sax, bass and guitar while you sip champagne under the stars. A Swinging Affair will run every Wednesday night until November 18.

Jazzstars Jamshow is a monthly open mic of sorts, where jazz musicians can strut their stuff on stage backed by the Shanghai Jazz Orchestra. This month has some old soundtracks on the program, like Tea for Two and Garrison's Gorillas. Interested cool cats and Daddy-Os should email jazzstars.jamshow@gmail.com.

Thursday: Charity Auction, Carmina Burana
OCN, the Overseas Chinese Network, is throwing a charity auction with Children Hope featuring items whose value starts at 3000 RMB, as well as holding raffles for over 20 prizes from spa vouchers to tickets to the 2010 Expo. 100% of proceeds will go to help Chen Chao, a 14-year-old girl from Sichuan who is in Shanghai receiving facial reconstruction surgery after being attacked and burned with sulphuric acid. ¥150 entrance fee includes wine and canapes.

You've probably heard famous opening to Carmina Burana in commercials like this one. Few people realize Carl Orff actually wrote the scenic cantata based off 24 Latin poems he found, many based around wine, women and song. See the full work- choral, orchestral, and ballet- performed as part of the Shanghai International Arts Fest by the Ballet Conceirto Argentina with famous leading ballerina Iñaki Urlezaga. (Having played the entire piece back in our geeky orchestra days, we fully recommend going. It's much better on stage than in the commercials.)

Friday: Halloween River Cruise
The Shanghai International Students Organization has put together a Halloween river party, complete with a four deck boat with room for 250 guests, a guest DJ from Bolivia, and a costume contest. Never mind that you're on the Huangpu- it's BYOB, so floating past the Pudong skyline while dressed as a giant banana or zombie will seem like the perfect pre-Halloween idea (as long as you don't fall overboard). There's also an after-party at GPlus, but don't party too hardy- you'll want to be in full form to rock the Shanghaiist Zombie Walk the next day!
