Wednesday, October 28th

MAO Livehouse starts the weekend off early with the commencement of NO+CH, an annual concert series featuring a musical exchange between Sino and Nordic cultures. Concerts by Food, MoHa!, Pekka, and Fontan kick off NO+CH ’09, the focus of which is to being about cultural appreciation through experimental music. 40RMB cover for night, or 120RMB ticket for entire series.

Theo Croker, the smooth trumpeter who wowed audiences at the JZ Shanghai Music Festival earlier this month, is accompanied by three other jazz musicians (bass, guitar, and sax) to form a swinging quartet this Wednesday. Starts 9:00pm. No cover.

Thursday, October 29th

Originally conceived as a one-time exhibition of student rock talent, We Come From University organizes its fifth installment in this concert series, underlining college-aged bands taking their music off-campus. Starts 8pm. Cover 20RMB.

Friday, October 30th

Lured to Shanghai by the Yue Festival in Shanghai in 2007, YACHT returns to the city this Friday for another explosive performance. Presented by STD and backed by opening acts Youth and Destroyer, Resit Resist, and Violent Phlegms, YATCH is sure have put together an act appropriately outlandish for Halloween weekend. Cover 60RMB at door.

Saturday, October 31st

24 Hours, a Beijing-based Indie/dance rock amalgam, hosts the party for the release of their new album, “No Party People” Halloween night. Their performance will be opened by Rustic, and the concert is part of a series of concerts around China (a mini-tour, one might say) to celebrate their new album. Cover 40RMB.

Maximilian Hecker, the professed German purveyor of airy synth pop, comes to town to play at Shanghai's MAO Livehouse. Often compared to Air, Hecker tours in support of his sixth album, ‘One Day’. Begins 8:00pm. Cover 100-200RMB, depending on seat.

Harley’s Bar rolls out all the big names in Shanghai’s metal scene, staging a concert lineup appropriate for celebrating Halloween. The music begins at 9:00pm and includes performances by Screaming Chist, Drawn in Suffering, Fearless, and Doom Prophet. Cover 40RMB.

Sunday, November 1st

Halloween may have come and passed, but that by no means puts an end to the possibility of wearing a costume. The Shanghai Autumn Anime Music Festival brings a massive collection of live bands to give every opportunity for concertgoers to nerd out hardcore. Starts 6pm. Cover 40RMB, 20RMB if in costume.

The Super VC, a British rock band that has garnered a Number 1 hit and a Best New Band award since its inception in 1993, returns to Shanghai for a rare performance presented by STD. Begins 9:00pm. Cover 60RMB.
