An iTablet in the forseeable future, but China's tab-let-outs first

p88.jpg Aside from the cut-and-paste actor-replacements in James Bond trailers, controversial fake RMB, assorted videos of imposter pandas and the like, the shanzhai umbrella customarily covers that of electronic goods. And for the shanzhai market, its newest target is the highly publicized (yet unconfirmed and completely rumored) Apple tablet.

Rumors have been a-fluttering about these mythical Apple tablets for quite a while. According to Shanzhai.com, "Apple themselves on their recent fourth-quarter earnings call helped to fuel the rumors by suggesting that they expected to see abnormal increases in Q1 2010 air freight costs that have 'nothing to do with iPhone or iPod.'"

Why does this matter to the Chinese consumer? Because Shenzhen Great Long Brother Industrial Co. has manufactured the P88, which features a simple 10.2” (1024x600) touch screen and looks suspiciously like concept sketches for the iTablet.

Had someone at Great Long Brother got early word on what the Apple device will look like? It wouldn't be the first time a "clone" has appeared in China before the launch of the real product (a la Sony's PSP Go).

Some specs regarding the P88: CPU: Intel Atom 1.6GHz; RAM: 1GB; HD: 160GB; Weight: 1.03kg; Dimensions: 280×180×22mm; Ports: 3xUSB, VGA, RJ-45, card-reader, earphone, mic; Connectivity: Wi-Fi, reserved 3G and GPS module space; Other: Metal bracket and stylus; Battery life: around 1.5hrs; Price: just under USD440.

If the P88 is anything close to what the real iTablet will be, we've got to admit we can't imagine anyone spending $440 for a device with 1.5 hours of battery life, especially when all it resembles is a plus-sized iPhone.
