Threesday Foodie Edition: Wonton recommendations from Shanghai papers

croaker_wonton.jpg In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well... whatever catches their fancy that week. And this week there happens to be two! We already gave you some recommendations for Shanghai-themed costumes and now we're taking a break from all the Halloweeny stuff to talk about FOOD!

With the weather getting cooler, nothing satisfies like a big bowl of hot soup and dumplings. Jiefang Daily apparently agrees and has compiled three great places to get wontons in Shanghai and since they happen to be the paper of record for the city, we're betting their recommendations are pretty solid. Without further ado, where the Shanghainese think you should slurp down some wontons.

1) Le Patio (南麓)
Location: No.3, Lane 995 Nanjing Xi Lu near Maoming Bei Lu, 南京西路955弄3号 近茂名北路

Le Patio was recommended based on their very special yellow croaker (黄鱼) wontons. While yellow croaker is a native fish to Hangzhou cuisine (where wontons allegedly sprung from), it's rare to see them pared with the humble dumpling. They recommend scooping up your wonton with a spoonful of the yellow croaker soup for maximum nyom factor.

2) Master Lee's Wonton Noodles (李师傅馄饨面)
Location:Room 104, No.1, 600 Minxing Lu near Zhongyuan Lu, 民星路600弄1号104室 近中原路

Though Master Lee's is small, its wonton noodles are considered a household name around the Yangpu District. The store has a load of different types of wontons, all of which Jiefang Daily suggests you try at least once. The soup is also no laughing matter - the beef stock is perfect and has a delicious, mellow aftertaste. It can be crowded though, so try to avoid peak wonton eating hours.

3)Fu Tai Snack Shop (福大点心店)
Location: 162 Huangjiaque Lu 黄家阙路162号

This recommendation is also a small shop and is located in the Huangpu district. They are known for their "small shrimp wontons." Each wonton has a thick, succulent shrimp dumpling mix. Patrons usually order two or three bowls at a time. Allegedly, they sell thousands of bowls a day and now do fish and shrimp ball soups as well. But nothing beats the shrimp wonton, which allegedly has a perfect proportion of meat to wonton skin.

Happy wonton hunting!
