The first screens of the new “Karate Kid” movie are out and well… here they are. As previous reports stated, it stars Will Smith’s kid (Jaden Smith) as a troubled 11-year-old who’s come to China with his mom and learns martial arts from an eccentric Asian master.
We may just be being cynical, but we’re going to assume this movie’s just yet another Hollywood attempt to pander to Chinese audiences in hopes of making box office gold on what otherwise would be a terrible flop. How else do you explain a need for at least one scene where Jaden (or “Dre,” as he’ll be called in the movie) trains on the Great Wall?
Because really – we’re only just getting over the fact that the movie’s still being called “The Karate Kid” despite “Dre” being ostensibly trained in Kung Fu (In fact, we’re not even sure why, with such a different plot from the 1984 movie, they bothered saying it was a remake at all. As if “bullied child meets dude who teaches him about life” wasn’t some old Hollywood trope to begin with) – but even with Jackie Chan and sucking up to Beijing and a Great Wall training montage, we doubt the movie will be as successful as the West wants it to be. Why? Well… remember their reaction to the half-black Oriental Angel Lou Jing? We wonder how those very same people will feel about this:
