Definitely check out some of our live music suggestions at night, but just in case you’re feeling geeky/artsy/cultural during the day, we’ve outlined some of this weekend's coolest/quirkiest-sounding art exhibitions, fashion launches and community events that will keep you buzzing around town until Sunday evening.
FRIDAY
Not Me brings you French electronic party La Nuit Electronique #2 for another night of music and street art. French artists Storm and Dezio will be creating graffiti art on the patio, while 6 DJs mix it up with house, techno, electro and minimal sounds.

SATURDAY
Just three weeks after the frenzy of their Jimmy Choo launch, H&M introduces another designer collaboration, this time with French lingerie house Sonia Rykiel. Head to the flagship store early to overindulge in sexy lace and satin high fashion at (comparatively) affordable prices.

If tech and not fashion’s your thing, head to the Shanghai BarCamp community geekfest! An intense ad-hoc “unconference” for participants to share and learn in an open environment, the theme is communication technology, covering topics from e-commerce, gaming, to creative art and design. All attendees are encouraged to contribute by giving a presentation or demo, or helping out with one. Topics that will be presented on include Taobao as an open platform, and the worst iPhone application in the world.

Special live music alert: local reggae pop band Lions of Puxi plays their last show of 2009 at the release party of their self-titled debut album. The global lineup for the night includes a Chinese opening band, French DJ Xeum, Japanese percussionist Kuli, and American trumpeter Theo Croker.

Do you collect small cute things? Er... then you might just love the My Little Friends Party at Not Me. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Little Thing Magazine (a Chinese female-oriented creative fashion magazine), they’re throwing a theme party where you’re supposed to dress up and bring along whatever little accessories you please (a toy, gadget, even bag of snacks). Prizes will be given for best/weirdest outfits.

SUNDAY
German artist Peter Lindenberg debuts his first solo exhibition, Urban Transfers, at Galerie Junger. It features a selection of cityscapes painted in Shanghai, Beijing, and Berlin, and invites the viewer to compare the abstract urban landscapes of each city.

Oh, the dedication a photographer must have in pursuit of a thoughtful, quirky, much-talked-about photo series. Andre Eichman’s initially light-hearted project to travel around China with a small kitsch statue of Mao Zedong turned into an on-off six year journey spent photographing and interviewing people about Mao. His photographs of those he met along the way (with the statues of Mao appearing somewhere in each shot) are collected in his exhibition “The Chairman and I”. See how a man with his statue managed to visually document Mao’s lasting impact on modern Chinese lives.
