Weekendist: Happy bday Lounge 18, SH:AM and Xmas cowboys

weekendist_logo.jpg Looking for something to do the weekend before Christmas? Have we got some events for you - rock shows, early Xmas parties and birthdays, this weekend is jam packed with things to do.

FRIDAY

Mirage, often credited as China's first prog-rock band, will be playing at Mao Livehouse. The folks there say Mirage fuses "heavy metal riffs with extended keyboard solos and instrumental passages, creating a large and impressive sound." Fearless will be supporting.
Mao Livehouse - 570 Huaihai Xi Lu near Hongqiao Lu 淮海西路570号 近红桥路. 60RMB. Starts at 9PM.

Lounge18 turns two and they're throwing an anniversary party to celebrate it. Spinning tunes will be DJ FEX from France and the dress code is twin identities - whatever that means.
Lounge 18, 4/F, Bund 18, 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu near Nanjing Dong Lu (中山东一路18号 近南京东路). 8:30PM entrance for VIPs, 10:30PM for the common people. RSVP by calling 63238399 or emailing happiness (@) lounge18 (.) com.

For the students, NOT ME hosts its monthly student night. Music will be a mix of pop, disco, punk, rock, electro, hip hop and indie. The crowd will be young.
NOT ME, 21 Dongping Lu, by Hengshan Lu (东平路21号 近衡山路), 80RMB all you can drink

SATURDAY

Jingle your bells a little early at the twocities gallery's 3rd annual Christmas party. Meet new friends, eat holiday treats, sing along to Christmas carols and participate in a lucky draw. Proceeds from the party will go to the Compassion for Migrant Children charity.
twocities gallery, 2F Bldg 0, 50 Moganshan Lu (莫干山路50号), free entrance, 2pm to 6pm.

Creek Art is closing, but before that happens they'll be throwing a factory party with SH:AM. House, techno and everything in between from Andre Franco, Chase and pchu. Hopefully all the warm bodies will keep that warehouse from feeling too chilly.
Creek Art, 423 Guangfu Lu near Wuzhen Lu (光复路423号 近误诊路), no cover.

We're not sure we like this concept of two concerts with two different entry fees in one night, but YYT is rolling with it. First, Bad Himo, Bao Zuo Wo Niu and Lei Ren will be playing Chinese indie rock starting 8pm. Then Stegosaurus and Les Turlupins Masques will come on at 10:30pm to strum to a different/same crowd.
Yuyintang, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu, Entrance at Kaixuan Lu (延安西路1731号 入口在凯旋路), Each show 30RMB

An unlikely combination that sounds fun none the less: cowboys, Christmas and one of Shanghai's oldest dance halls. Paramount is holding a "Wild West Christmas" and they'll be giving 100 cowboy hats out to the first guys who come in. RnB and house music all night.
80RMB for girls, 100RMB for guys (free flow open bar all night)

SUNDAY

For one night only, Japanese visual rockers Plastic Tree will be at Mao Livehouse. They're heavily influenced by 80s Brit-pop and love putting on artistic soundtracks. Also, they're hot bishounen men and look like they're straight out of a rocker anime. We love.
Mao Livehouse - 570 Huaihai Xi Lu near Hongqiao Lu 淮海西路570号 近红桥路. 340RMB at door, 280RMB presale. Starts at 8PM.

China street punx Gum Bleed will be playing their hardcore punk rock (with bits of trash metal and folk rock mixed in) at YYT. "They use the most manic drums ,the most rough distortion guitar and the most violent roar to fight on the front line against the money ruling, class oppression and the racial discrimination," say the organizers. Whip out the anarchy t-shirts.
Yuyintang, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu, Entrance at Kaixuan Lu (延安西路1731号 入口在凯旋路), 40RMB, 9PM
