Marriage is forever, unless you get divorced, or so the saying goes. Well, the Shanghai version also includes “or want to make some money really quick:” couples who divorce receive double the state’s compensation for relocation, so the new trick is to get divorced, get paid, and then get remarried.
According to Shanghai Daily, the scam is becoming pretty popular. In 2009, over six thousand couples applied to get remarried after being divorced: one couple married and divorced six times, which we’re guessing is a pretty penny in government dollars. We wonder if those government funds count towards GDP growth?
Among other interesting marriage news, interracial marriages waned by five percent last year: officials speculate that it’s due to Shanghai women being less interested in marrying foreigners to get out of China. In addition, marriages in general rose by six percent, probably due to the marriage spike for 9/9/09. But since this year’s most auspicious dates (Valentine’s day and the coveted 10/10/10, which means full and complete thrice over in Chinese) will be closed for marriages, it looks like that trend won’t be continuing.
