Weekendist highlights some of the fun things to try out in Shanghai over the weekend.
Oh boy, and what a weekend it is! Not only are there some fun musical acts to catch and free drink nights/deals a plenty, there’s also endless ways to give back to the community. Go for one of TWO charity fairs being held on Saturday… or donate your time to playing with cats and dogs at a shelter in the suburbs on Sunday.
The renowned Hideaki Ishi, better known to the music world as DJ Krush, finally returns to Shanghai after a three-year absence. We’ve been told that the Shelter is extra excited to see him come perform (he’s a personal hero or something of Gary’s)… so that probably means you should check it out. The Japanese hip-hop turntable wizard/mixmaster and producer will be joined by the Lab crew. Cover: 80RMB.

Good Jive!, a new organization dedicated to promoting fresh and interesting music in Shanghai, kicks off at Yuyintang with local favorites Duck Fight Goose, Boys Climbing Ropes, Dainbow Danger Club and Attractive Rootline. Cover: 40RMB

Dada tells us about the Dangers of UP. We’re not sure we get the concept, but expect industrial hip hop, hard electro, doom funk and other stuff along those lines. Oh, and cheap drinks. Because it’s Dada.

Also, New FreeSoul, a lovely lil’ bar in the Changning district, turns three years old. It’ll be celebrating with a buy-one-get-one-free deal on draft beer, house pours, tequila and margaritas from 5pm til close. Three cocktails will runyou 100RMB, inlcuding lime pie martinis and mojitos. Yum.

The monthly IFAIR Charity fair has countless stalls boasting both original creations by local artisans and second-hand goods. If you want to sell your own stuff, pay just 20RMB for a table. All of the proceeds will directly support over 100 local families with mentally challenged children.

And if you want to try out another one, Charity Flea Market raises money each month to support the Stepping Stones volunteer program, which teaches English and supports children in migrant schools. Entrance fee is any donation above 1RMB.
11am to 5pm, 1933ART, 3FL No.10, Shajing lu near Zhoujiazui lu 沙井路进周家嘴路
Shanghai Studio is promising a new gay party that’s bound to be awesome. If you like Lil Wayne or Lady Gaga or Juan Maclean or Cut Copy, you’ll like dancing in this dungeon-ish den of debauchery.

Urban goods store, The Source, will pump you with free beers while screening Star Wars flicks this night (and it’s all free!). Some people will also be dressed as storm troopers. What else could you possibly need?

Volunteer with BEAN and SCAA to play, groom, and give some love to cats and dogs at a foster home for about 200 abandoned animals. The home is around an hour outside the city, so you’ll need to pony up a 35RMB donation for a shared van and RSVP at [email protected] What better way to spend a Sunday than to help animals in need?
