In case you haven’t heard, Stephon Marbury is heading to Shanxi to play Basketball. Marbury (or Starbury, if you remember his glory days as a two-time all star, or own a pair of his signature shoes) will be playing in the CBA with the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons in the lovely capital city of Taiyuan. We’re excited, as we really missed watching him mope on the bench back in New York, though we imagine he’ll be a bit more active than his glory days of watching basketball with Spike Lee.
So what are netizens around China saying about it? Well, it seems most people can’t imagine Marbury living in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi. Apparently, before he decided to come, Marbury interrogated a reporter for the CBA with hard hitting questions like “where’s McDonald’s?“. As far as Netease is concerned, it looks like Marbury is coming here because
his career in the US is pretty much over he wants to expand his shoe company’s market.
American Netizens are a little more pessimistic about the move, as Marbury has pretty much been benched for the past few years, mostly due to his inability to get along with his coaches. Some choice comments from Deadspin include “the U.S. is just trying to reach parity with China on shoddily performing exports,” “And I was convinced that Rush Hour 8: Traveling Violation would never see the light of day,” and the risque “He heard Chinese interns will let you fill all Three Gorges.”
We can just hope that Marbury’s tenure in the CBA won’t be as short lived as Bonzi Wells’ attempt last year: Yao Ming’s old teammate got the boot last year from the Brave Dragons after failing to return on time from partying in America. Nonetheless, we’re excited to see how high a former NBA all star can rise in the CBA, but mostly just curious to see how many pairs of Starburys he can sell.
