Welcome to the world of the 8800RMB apple
(Alternative title: How do you like them apples?)
Found at a department store in Suzhou Industrial Park, this apple has a super red, glossy color, weighs in at 1.5kg and is roughly the size of a volleyball. But that's not the only reason it's 8800RMB (roughly $1,290 USD). It also has a golden Buddha painted on it. Well then, that makes it worth the price, we suppose.
Anyway, the apple type is called "Tian Jia," which we suppose translates to "Astronomical Apple." It's considered a Super Fuji and is flown in from the same rough area - Japan's Aomori Prefecture. According to the shop, each "Astronomical Apple" tree only produces two apples that are big enough to be sold. Getting those "exquisite" golden patterns on it is a laborious process that requires reapplying the same paint 100 times. Good thing is, these works of art last a while - it'll be fine at room temperature for six months.
Just so you know, someone did actually pay that price for that apple. Allegedly someone from Shanghai. Figures.
