Looking for a dose of Shanghainese culture immersion? You will do well to skip Zhou Libo and those yappy middle-aged ladies at the neighborhood market. Check out what we’d stumbled upon last weekend at Club G+. Homeboys rappin’ up a storm in the Shanghainese dialect, complete with bubble machines, gorilla suits, confetti and cardboard props.
For sure it’s an eye-opening experience to witness how Shanghainese pride has manifested itself in youth culture this part of China. At least now we know the secret of G+’s success: giving its predominantly Shanghainese youth crowds what they want (and at the same time, reeling in hungry foreign university boys and awkward-looking older businessmen types on the side). We wonder though, if this is the case in other Chinese clubs in town as well.
