While Wang Beixing might have only gotten a copper for her effort at the 500M speed skating event, team member Wang Meng managed to win gold for the women’s 500M short track. The 2006 Turin Games champion defended her title, crossing with a time of 43.048 seconds. Canada’s Marianne St-Gelais managed to get second place and Italy’s Arianna Fontana took the bronze.
According to a gushing review at Washington Post:
She made it look easy, leading all the way after surviving a restart and a false start in the four-woman final.
“On the final two laps, I still felt my legs shaking,” she said through a translator. “I guess when you’re so close to what you’ve always wanted, it’s natural to be shaken.”
Wang was so far ahead she didn’t bother to try to lower her own Olympic record.
“I didn’t think about anything but the end result,” she said. “I wanted to be first across the finish line.”
Once again, a video of her finish can be found on CCTV
