Cinematheque: Ladies in control of the camera (and other film news)

lo-mejor-de-mi.jpg
"Lo mejor de mí" is one of the eight movies that will be shown as a part of the program "Espacio Femenino: Women in Front And Behind the Camera" at the Spanish Consulate these coming five days. Starting tonight!
You don't have to be Laura Mulvey to realize that most of the actors you see in film are male, most directors are male, and most stories are told from a somewhat "male" perspective. Time to make way for female directors and female actors, and try to shrug that male gaze off our eyes and minds.

We therefore suggest that you plan for a five days long movie program offered by the Cultural Section of Consulate General of Spain, starting tonight! The aim of the program is to highlight films created or directed by women, hence the name Espacio Femenino: Women in Front And Behind the Camera. This is the festival we wish wouldn´t have to exist, but since the film industry is still everything from gender balanced, Espacio Femenino surely has a void to fill.

Eight movies will be shown, all in Spanish with English subtitles:

This film program showcases a selection of works created or directed by women, displaying a visually rich and diverse perspective in the industry. Espacio Femenino will open on February 24th to present 5 screenings of contemporary films; fiction feature film, sociohistorical documentary, creative documentary, selection of shorts...

On February 24th, Justine Rochot will introduce the titles and briefly explore different female representations in Eastern and Western film making. The presentation will be conducted in Chinese with Spanish translation.

The event is open to the general public.

  • 72 Tenants of Prosperity (七十二家租客): A "throw-in-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-oh-what-the-heck-throw-that-in-too comedy". The story is a love triangle - two men in love with the same girl. One wins, the other loses, and they become enemies. But something larger happens that forces the men to form an uneasy alliance, along with their 70 fellow shopkeepers on the street: An evil landlord is set to raise the rent on the 72 tenants, threatening their economic survival. The film is a Lunar New Year's comedy, a movie genre that is often unabashedly silly with a childlike playfulness, with the simple mission to instill 90 minutes of happiness. "72 Tenants of Prosperity" certainly aims for that, but producer-director-star Eric Tsang has something more on his mind. His inspiration is the 1973 classic "The House of 72 Tenants," a film that broke Hong Kong box-office records set by Bruce Lee and became something of a cultural phenomenon. Tsang opens his film with the same style of credits, the same opening gag, and a spot-on re-creation of 1970s Hong Kong filming style.
