Making it in Shanghai is tough – especially for the kids of those who didn’t manage to hit the wave of prosperity during the early years of opening and reform. Youku Buzz has highlighted this film, a recent entry into the ongoing 17th Beijing University Student Film Festival titled “Tina’s Life in Shanghai.”
The 17 minute film (which, thankfully, has English subtitles), follows Tina, a university graduate from Hunan who works at Nino’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Gubei, as she tries to survive in Shanghai. She came here She lives in a 6 square meter room which costs 350RMB a month, and lives on roughly 1600RMB a month for her beyond full time job, some of which gets sent home.
It’s an interesting look at those who, despite all their struggles, were only able to get the crumbs of China’s giant economic pie… and into the lives of one of the disaffected staff for patrons of Nino’s.
